Oh, and I meant to say, I'm now using the IntenseDebate plugin for WordPress on my blog, which allows for reputation and comment rating across any blog which uses the same system. I don't get near the number necessary to make such a system work just on my site, but by tapping into a wider community, it might have more relevance.

Shane - have you had a look at the Stack Overflow system? It's awesome and a great example of how the tech can drive behaviour and ensure that the cream rises to the top.

I agree that some people will try and game any system, but it *is* possible, with proper planning, and the right tech to get community self-moderation working.

I can't argue about the need for the signal to noise ratio on comments to be improved in high volume sites, and I hope that communities can do this.

BUT

I fear that in some cases the system for promoting comments will be gamed, or that communities simply won't bother because the S/N ratio is already so poor. How many large blogs eg FAIL have the first ten comments saying "F!RST!!"? When did you last read the comments on Guido or CiF or YouTube? If site owners want to have interesting comment sections they'll have to invest in some editorialising themselves.

Can they do that and still be trusted?

And that, Mr Comment Spammer, is my point. Not so niche after all, apparently.
